The Talent of Iago in Shakespeares Othello Essay -- Shakespeare Othel
The Talent of Iago in Othelloà à à à à William Shakespeare's Othello is a tragic drama that shows the overwhelming power of deception and the damage it can lead to.à Othello's right-hand man is Iago; on the surface a die-hard friend and confidant, in reality comparable to the devil himself.à Iago uses other characters as though they were his puppets, planting lies and watching the sorrowful fruit born.à Iago deceives virtuous, yet weaker men (such as Cassio and Roderigo) with ease, but feels greatly threatened by the most powerful, virtuous general in the land - Othello.à Othello's only flaw is jealousy, and Iago exploits this to no end, using him to get what he wants.à Iago's talent to manipulate the truth and control other people with his lies is what gives this play momentum.à More than any other characteristic, Iago preys on those who are emotionally unsure of their desires.à Iago manages to find ways of altering these characters' perceptions of reality, forcing them to believe in the dark world that Iago has created for them.à The main emotions that Iago bends and twists are those of love... ... Hrm and Employment Relationships
HRM and Employment Relationships Employment Relationship Employment Relationship can economical, social and political relationship in which employees provide manual and mental labour in exchange for reward from employers (Gospel and Palmer 1993) There are 4 Dimensions within the employment relationship * Economic exchange ââ¬â Wage-effort bargain * Socio-political ââ¬â Power * Legal/Contractual * Psychological contract/social exchange Contract of employment is formed when an offer of employment is made and accepted There are 3 ââ¬Ëtypesââ¬â¢ of contract in the employment relationship (Schein 1980): 1. Formal ââ¬â Economic and legal; 2. Informal ââ¬â Reflecting the social norms in the workplace (the organisational ââ¬Ëcultureââ¬â¢) and those in wider society about how people should treat each other (ââ¬ËNatural justiceââ¬â¢); 3. Psychologrcal (implicit ââ¬Ëcontractââ¬â¢ made up of unspoken expectations and obligations). The Psychological Contract of Employment A set of unwritten reciprocal expectations between an individual employee and the organisationââ¬â¢ (Schein 1977) Positive psychological contract through particular configurations of HR policies and practices * Behavioural and performance outcomes such as job satisfaction, employee commitment, motivation and lowered intention to quit. The Explicit Contract of employment An agreement between two parties enforceable by lawâ⬠¦ a contract of service and comes into being when an employee agrees to work for an employer in return for payââ¬â¢ (ACAS) * Accumulation of rights and responsibilities for both parties * The terms of a contract can be: * Express (explicitly agreed between the parties, either in writing or orally) * Implied (not explicitly agreed but which would be taken by the parties to form part of the contract Control VS Commitment With the evolution of people management there is now more of a focus on control. The logic of control Direct control * Low trust employment relationship * Strict supervision and task specification * Subordination of labour to capital. Responsible autonomy High trust commitment relationships A degree of worker discretions and responsibility Edwards (1979) developed this analysis by identifying two ââ¬Ëstructuralââ¬â¢ strategies for control: Technical control -built into machinery and technology (Fordist) Bureaucratic control -Control via internal labour markets, career structures and the position of individuals relative to one another with regard to job security, status and ââ¬Ërankââ¬â¢. Social control Conformity and compliance with a set of formal or informal rules Internalisation of norms and values of a group Handy (1976), referring to organisations in their broadest possible sense (not only work organisations), identifies three types of psychological contract: Coercive * Contract is not entered into freely (e. . prisons) * Majority dominated by minority who exercise control by rule/punishment * Emphasis on conformity. Calculative * Contract is entered into freely but control is maintained by management * Power is expressed in terms of their ability to give desired rewards to the individual. Co-operative * Individual tends to identify with the goals of the organisation and strive for their attainment through individual effort. * Effort is based on the degree the individual has input in the company's goals. Commitment is closely associated with motivation, but whereas motivation is focused mainly on the individual, commitment is more strongly associated with the individualââ¬â¢s attachment to, and identification with, the work organisation and the organisationââ¬â¢s goalsââ¬â¢ (Blyton ; Jenkins 2008; 139) Employee commitment and association with the aims and values of the firm are the mediating link between HR policies and practices and enhanced individual and organisational performance Relationship reflects form of ââ¬Ëlabourââ¬â¢ involved and that can be ââ¬Ëboughtââ¬â¢ in this exchange: * Physical * Mental (ââ¬Ëthinkingââ¬â¢) * Emotional (ââ¬Ëthe act of expressing organisationally-desired emotions during service transactionsââ¬â¢: Morris ; Feldman 1996; 987) * Aesthetic (ââ¬Ëlooking goodââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ësounding rightââ¬â¢: Nickson et al. 2003).

Animal Farm, 1984 Essay - 605 Words
Animal farm and 1984 Napoleon, the leader of all the animals of the Rebellion, can be compared and contrasted with Big Brother, the leader of all the people of 1984. Both Big Brother and Napoleon show the qualities of a cruel ruler. Similar to Big Brother, Napoleon is a secretive plotter who works behind the scenes rather than openly. However, unlike Napoleon, Big Brother periodically appears on the television screen. Napoleon and Big Brother both work continually to weaken their rivals, whether it is by removing Snowball or eliminate Rutherford. Both place importance on complicated ceremonies and parades to prevent their workers from thinking about their schemes. Napoleonââ¬â¢s control over animal farm is not as powerful as Big Brothersâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦At the end, one is presumably vaporized. One time, being too passionate about games with my friends, I forgot to come back home, making my parents extremely worry and find me everywhere. Finding out me in the yard with my friends, she furiously shouted at me and hit me in front of all my friends including the boy that I liked. It is too ashamed! In the following day,as usual she went to work and left me alone at home . However, this time I decided not to stay alone in that boring house. My Life Struggle free essay sample
My life story summed up is a story of; survival, culture, love, hate, compassion, family values, triumphs, and failures. Growing up in the south side of Chicago was harsh. I became used to hearing police sirens and ambulances rushing to the hospital on a daily basis. Gun shots would wake me up in the middle of the night instead of nightmares of the boogey man. With only the basic necessities a family could attain, the idea to pursue an education wasnââ¬â¢t always a definite subject because we couldnââ¬â¢t financially afford it. Iââ¬â¢ve had a lot of experiences that have set me back from believing in my dreams but I have always had people in my life that have supported me. During my life there has been a significant person that has greatly changed me into becoming more altruistic. This person is my mother. My mother has been a great influence in my life. We will write a custom essay sample on My Life Struggle or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page A couple months ago, I competed in the Mexican Civic Society beauty pageant because I was informed there was going to be scholarships awarded to the winners. I saw this as an opportunity to help me with college. Halfway through the competition, I started to feel uncertainty in myself because I felt I couldnââ¬â¢t manage the stress. I was studying for the ACT at school and still trying to cope with the pageantââ¬â¢s responsibilities. When it seemed I was down on the rocks, about to drop out of the competition, my mother insisted for me to continue but to also study in order to do well on my ACT. On the final day of the competition, as I was standing on stage to hear the winners, my heart was pounding with anxiety. When I heard my name as First Princess, I immediately looked for my mother in the audience. When I finally seen her face, I felt a surge of accomplishment. The look in my motherââ¬â¢s eyes will be a visual I will never forget. Her eyes filled with tears of joy. My mother was proud of me. She deserves more than recognition because she has always supported me. She is the reason why I continue making positive choices every day. She has also taught me to always help others in need not only myself. A way in which I learned more about myself was through The National Hispanic Institute, a leadership program for high school students. After some time of being part of the Institute, I realized I had finally become a great speaker. I still remember giving a speech in front of two hundred people. The ââ¬Å"knotâ⬠in my stomach would only get worse after anticipating the fact of going up there. When I finally got up there in front of the microphone, I let go of all my fears and instead I smiled. My confidence strived and I did a great job because I believed in myself. I gained more confidence every time I debated against other students. I overcame my fear of public speaking. My most important goal in life has been to exceed beyond othersââ¬â¢ expectations. I have always tried hard in school to get good grades because my family always instilled the belief of education being a key factor. My dedication to my family and education has differentiated me from others. Ultimately, if it wasnââ¬â¢t for mother and the National Hispanic Institute, the direction of my life because of the decisions I would have made would have gone down ââ¬Å"the road less traveled byâ⬠, in other words the easy way out. Iââ¬â¢m one of the very few who continues to persevere through the obstacles because the ambition to be successful keeps me trying.
